It wasnt the first time optimistic and enthusiastic editors had asked me if I would like to write for their new born literary venture. In the past I had, more often than not, politely refused, but there was something special about Slightly Foxed - the wonderful cover illustrations and wood engravings, the promise of being in the company of excellent writing and, of course, the Slightly Foxed idea which, said Hazel and Gail, was to write about a book you love, it didnt have to be a new book, could, should even, be slightly foxed. So I wrote Distant Harmonies, the first of what turned out to be eleven essays, pieces of literary memoir, all of which are included here.
